STILLWATER, Okla. - Amy Graham jump-started a four-run fourth inning for Oklahoma State with a one-out home run to send the Cowgirls to a 4-1 series-clinching victory over Texas Tech Saturday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.
The loss was the second of the day for the Red Raiders (27-14; 1-2), who fell, 2-1, in the second game of the series that was resumed in the eighth inning after storms halted the game Friday evening. Tech had previously defeated Oklahoma State (24-13; 2-1), 10-0, in six innings Thursday evening.
"We didn't hit the ball very well today and that was disappointing," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "We left too many runners on base and you can't do that against good teams like Oklahoma State. We didn't perform quite like I thought we would."
Graham's solo home run in the fourth was only the second earned run off the Tech pitching staff to that point in the series. It led to three more runs, though, as a Cara Custer wild pitch scored one and then back-to-back RBI singles from Ari Morrison and Tarah Ettinger plated two additional runners.
The Red Raider bats, meanwhile, could find no answer for the tandem of Simone Freeman and Kat Espinosa as Tech finished with just three hits in the game. Tech totaled just four hits over nine total innings Saturday as well.
Despite just the three hits, the Red Raiders managed to strand 10 runners after five OSU errors and three walks put a runner on base in each inning, including the bases loaded in the first. Tech wrapped the series with 21 runners stranded over the final two games.
Emily Cooper, making her first start of the season, drove in Tech's only run with a one-out double down the left field line in the fourth. Samantha Camello and Katelyn Williams had Tech's only other two hits with leadoff singles to start the second and seventh innings.
Tech had a chance to make a late rally in the seventh after Williams' single was followed by a walk from Sandy James. Adriana Perez struck out and Lexie Elkins lined into a double play to end the game, however.
Espinosa (13-7) picked up the win for the Cowgirls as she gave up just the one unearned run in the fourth and two hits in her five innings of relief work. She came in for Simone Freeman, who allowed a hit and two walks in her two innings.
Brittany Talley (9-5) suffered the loss as she gave up three runs off four hits and three walks in 3.1 total innings. Tech used a total of three pitchers in the fourth inning alone as Cara Custer failed to record an out before Talley returned moments later.
Gretchen Aucoin came on soon after to pitch the final 2.2 innings where she did not allow a run off four hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Like Tech, OSU managed to strand 12 runners as well.
The Red Raiders return to Rocky Johnson Field next weekend for their Big 12 home opener against Kansas. The three-game series begins at 7 p.m. Friday evening.
