April 5, 1998
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team failed to produce much offense as they were swept by fourth ranked Oklahoma 1-6 and 0-8 today at the Berl Huffman Complex. The Red Raiders fell to 4-4 in Big 12 play and 38-14 overall. The Sooners remained undefeated in Big 12 action with a perfect 5-0 mark and moved to 34-8 overall.
In game one, Tech took an early lead when Sandy Butler scored on a double by Ellen Middleton in the bottom of the first. The Sooners answered in the top of the first with one run, but it would be the sixth inning that proved the most productive for Oklahoma. The Sooners scored four runs and added another in the top of the seventh. Tech pitcher Amanda Renfro took the loss. She had six runs on 13 hits. Renfro is 17-8 on the season. Oklahoma's Lana Moran improved her season mark to 16-5. She struck out five Red Raiders and allowed six hits.
Game two wasn't much better for Tech as Sooner pitcher Jennifer Jaime allowed only one hit in six innings of work. Oklahoma scored two runs in the top of the third, two more in the fourth and four in the sixth. Tech's Emily Hayes got the loss, allowing four runs on six hits.
"Offensively we just couldn't get anything started today. We didn't hit the ball well and we had some fundamental breakdowns on defense," Texas Tech Head Coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.
The next home series for Tech will be on Friday as they face Nebraska in a doubleheader beginning at noon. Iowa State will be in town Saturday for another twin bill set for 1 p.m.
