Softball Gets Swept by Nebraska

Red Raiders lose opener in eleven innings.

April 10, 1998

LUBBOCK, Texas - It was a long day at the ballpark for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, as they lost 3-4 and 1-3 to the University of Nebraska. Tech falls to 38-16 on the season and 4-6 in Big 12 play. The Huskers move to 30-8 and 8-0 in league action.

It took 11 innings to decide game one. The Red Raiders started the scoring in the bottom of the first when Sandy Butler scored on a single by Ellen Middleton. Tech scored one run in the following inning when Paula Workman crossed home on a single by Jennifer Beach. The Huskers answered in the top of the third as Ali Viola hit a two run homerun that scored Kelly Pinkepank. The score remained knotted throughout regulation and into the first inning of the international tie breaker. In the top of the eleventh inning, Jenny Smith scored after an error by Tech right fielder Stephanie Walls. Then, Jenny Voss bunted in Jessica Robbins for the Huskers final run. The Red Raiders attempted a late comeback in the bottom of the inning. Jeanette Lanford scored on a two-out single by Walls. But a fielder's choice ended the game, and gave Amanda Renfro her ninth loss of the season. Husker pitcher Jenny Voss improved to 23-6.

Nebraska took a 1-0 lead in the second game Jennifer Lizama scored on a single by Ali Viola. Tech added their first mark on the board when Jessica Karenke scored on a Tamara Harrington single to centerfield. The Huskers accumulated another run in the third when Lizama scored on an error by Harrington. But, it would be the seventh inning that proved the most costly for Tech. With two outs, Viola hit a three run homerun that put the game out of reach for Tech. Christy McCoy picked up the win for Nebraska, while Amanda Renfro's record dropped to 17-10.

"We lost our intensity and our concentration at very crucial segments in the game. We have got to learn to stay focused throughout the entire game. We did well offensively, but this game requires you to work just as hard on defense," Texas Tech Head Coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.

Tech will be back in action tomorrow as they face Iowa State in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Berl Huffman Complex.
