Softball Sweeps Iowa State

April 11, 1998

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech picked up two much needed Big 12 wins as they swept Iowa State 2-1 and 1-0 today at the Berl Huffman Complex. Texas Tech moved to 40-16 on the season and 6-6 in Big 12 action. Iowa State fell to 10-18 overall and 2-7 in league play.

In the day's opening game, the Cyclones notched their first run in the top of the fourth when Cinammon Gooding scored on a centerfield single by Missy Danilson. The Red Raiders followed suit in the bottom of the inning when Stephanie Walls' single to right field drove in pinch runner Christine Munoz. Tech added another run in the fifth when Sandy Butler singled down the right field line to score Jenny Kohler. Red Raider freshman pitcher Amanda Renfro struck out seven as she improved her mark to 18-10 on the season. Mandy Loushin got the loss for Iowa State.

Game two was scoreless until the Red Raiders Jennifer Beach scored on a single by Walls in the bottom of the fifth. That would be all the runs Tech needed as they shutout the Cyclones 1-0. Amanda Renfro got her second win of the day and the Cyclone's Kristin Ferguson was saddled with the loss.

"We played with a lot of intensity and concentration today. Our defense was tough and our pitching was effective. That is what we need to do every game from here on out," Texas Tech Head Coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.

Texas Tech will wrap up their 1998 home season next Saturday as they face Baylor in a doubleheader. Game time is noon at the Berl Huffman Complex.
