Tech Experiences Déjà vu in 5-3 loss to #4 Nebraska
April 27, 2002
LUBBOCK, Texas - With one out in the top of the eighth Peaches James hit her ninth homerun of the year, a two run shot to center, and crushed Texas Tech's upset bid at Rocky Johnson Field in the process. Tech (13-38, 2-15 Big 12) got things rolling in a hurry scoring three runs on six hits in the home half of the first off the Husker's starter James. Esmerelda Perez and Rebecca Eimen led off the inning with back-to-back singles and after a Kristi Robles sacrifice bunt Tech had runners on second and third with one out. Junior Jana Baker then collected the third hit of the inning and plated both Perez and Eimen. A Carmen Grindell single drove in the final run of the inning for the Red Raiders as pinch runner Michell Vlahos scored from second and gave Tech a 3-0 lead after one. Nebraska (41-11, 10-5 Big 12) cut the Tech lead to two, 3-1, in the top of the second aided by an error on Red Raider shortstop Kristi Robles. Leigh Suhr's groundball that was misplayed at short would prove costly as Suhr advanced to second on a wild pitch and would score on an Anne Steffan two-out single. The Cornhuskers continued to cut into the Tech lead scoring a single run in the fifth and tying the game in the sixth on a passed ball. Just like in the game one with Texas on April 17th, Tech found itself in extra innings against a ranked opponent and just like in that game, the third batter in the inning dealt the fatal blow. Nicole Trimboli popped out to second to lead off the inning and Amber Burgess followed with a walk to set up Jame's heroics.
James settled down after the shaky first and did not allow a Tech hit between the second and seventh innings.
These two teams will close out the 2002 regular season tomorrow afternoon at The Rock before heading to Oklahoma City for the Big 12 Tournament. |
