OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Lady Raider softball team once again faced Kansas in the first game of the Big 12 Tournament but this year's match up was much more sweet with Tech handing Kansas a 5-1 loss today in Oklahoma City, Okla., at Don E. Porter Hall of Fame Stadium. Tech then faced #1 seed Texas, falling 7-1 to the Longhorns.
In the first Esmerelda Perez walked and Shayne Gipson followed with a fielder's choice. Kristi Robles cleared the bases with a two-run triple and later scored a run off a fielder's choice by Andrea Joachims to send the team into inning two with a 3-0 lead. Tech put two more runs up on the board and allowed no hits in the third. Joachims hit a long single to right field scoring Kelly Rhyne, who landed on base with balls, and Amanda Douglas, who finished 2-for-3 on the day, who singled. Kansas knocked a shutout out of the hands of the Lady Raiders when Mel Wallach scored on an error. Stines pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and no earned runs. The Lady Raiders turned the lead into a 5-1 win and into the championship bracket. Against Texas, there were no hits until the bottom of the third when both Texas and Tech logged two hits. Texas' Lindsey Gardner hit a two-run homerun with Robles and Rhyne logging singles. Texas continued in the third with two hits scoring three runs. In the fifth Texas pitcher Cat Osterman left the game after pitching five complete innings with two hits. Lizi Sowers entered the game and Robles, finishing 2-for-3 against the Longhorns, hit a single but no runs were scored.
In the sixth, Texas logged five hits including a homerun to increase the lead to 7-0. In the bottom of the seventh, Britney Stolle logged her first hit of conference and was followed by Perez with a single.
