LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech seniors Adriana Perez and Mikey Kenney earned the first preseason honors of the 2013 season Thursday as the duo was named to the College Sports Madness Preseason All-Big 12 team.
Perez led the two selections as she was one of 12 players named to the first team while Kenney picked up second team honors in the outfield. It marked the second-straight year Tech had two players honored on the website's preseason teams as Sandy James and Emily Bledsoe were both second-team recipients prior to the 2012 season.
An All-Big 12 second team selection a year ago, Perez led the Red Raiders with a .351 average in 2012 to go along with 15 home runs and 55 RBI. The Lancaster, Calif. native was among the Big 12 leaders in several offensive categories en route to leading Tech to its second-straight 40-win season and third-consecutive postseason trip.
Kenney, meanwhile, earned All-Big 12 first team honors last season after totaling a .314 average as well as 13 home runs and 31 RBI from the top of the lineup. Already the school's career home run and runs scored leader, the Arvada, Colo. native enters 2013 ranked among the top 10 in nearly every career offensive category in school history as she has recorded a .317 average along with 32 home runs and 102 RBI over the previous three seasons.
Perez was named College Sports Madness' Field Player of the Year following the 2012 season and also earned first-team honors on the website's postseason teams. Kenney and departed senior Logan Hall also received second-team accolades as well.
Tech begins preparations for the 2013 season Sunday afternoon when the Red Raiders report back to campus for the first preseason practice of the year. The Red Raiders open the 2013 season on Feb. 8 in a doubleheader against Central Florida and DePaul.
