LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech softball coach Shanon Hays announced Thursday the creation of the Monday Night Softball Academy which will allow youth players from the Lubbock area an opportunity to improve their game in a camp environment.
The four-week academy begins Jan. 20 and runs for four-straight weeks, featuring multiple sessions each Monday dedicated to hitting, pitching and fielding under the guidance of the Tech coaching staff.
All three different camps will be limited by numbers only and split into two, 30-minute sessions. Campers may register for multiple sessions provided that times do not conflict. Tech will host its fielding and pitching sessions from 5:30-6:30 p.m. while the hitting clinics will run from 6:30-7:30 p.m. each Monday night.
Associate head coach Aly Sartini will oversee the pitching sessions that will focus on fundamentals and drills to increase control and command in the circle. The 30-minute pitching sessions are $45 per camper or $180 for all four weeks.
On the diamond, new Tech assistant coach Greg Evans will run campers through many of the same drills that the Red Raiders go through each day. The fielding sessions will focus on infield work with Evans, who in his 15-plus seasons in collegiate baseball produced several of the nation's top defenses.
Hays will end each night with the hitting sessions that will have campers participating in batting practice and going through drills as it was a regular Tech practice. Under Hays, the Red Raiders have transformed into one of the top offenses in the country each season, setting school records for batting average, home runs and runs scored.
Both the fielding and hitting sessions cost $25 per camper or $100 for all four weeks. All sessions are for campers ages 10 and up and will be held at Rocky Johnson Field as well as the Tech indoor practice cages that are adjacent to the stadium.
Interested campers can register by contacting volunteer assistant coach Holley Gentsch in the Texas Tech softball office at either firstname.lastname@example.org or 806-834-0407.
