Softball Hosts Southwest Texas

Tech set to open home season against Southwest Texas
Texas Tech will take the week off before opening their 1998 home season on Feb. 16 against Southwest Missouri State. The first game of the double header will begin at 1 p.m. at the Berl Huffman Complex.

The Bobcats return four starters and four letterwinners off a team that went 12-37 last season. They finished seventh in the Southland Conference with a mark of 8-15. Southwest Texas is coached by Lea Ann Jarvis, who is 47-112 at the helm of the Bobcat team.

Tech holds a 3-1 series record over the Bobcats. Last season, Tech defeated Southwest Texas 3-1 and 8-7 in a Feb. 8 series. Emily Hayes and Danielle Brady picked up the wins.

Red Raiders win Lobo Invitational
The Texas Tech softball team opened their 1998 season by claiming the top spot in the Lobo Invitational.

On Saturday, Tech defeated Eastern New Mexico, Western New Mexico and the University of New Mexico. Pitchers Emily Hayes, Danielle Brady and Amanda Renfro all garnered their first wins of the season.

On Sunday, Tech split with New Mexico and handed Adams State a 13-4 loss. Brady picked up another win, as did Renfro, while Hayes threw her first loss.

Second baseman Jenny Kohler hit .636 for the weekend. She drove in nine runs, recorded 12 hits and scored five runs.

Senior Denise Jackson racked up two homeruns, while Paula Workman hit one. Jackson also had three triples, while Tamara Harrington and Kim Tillett added one apiece during the tournament.
