LUBBOCK, Texas - After hitting over .400 with a pair of home runs last weekend, Sandy James was named the Big 12 Player of the Week Tuesday in an announcement by the conference office.
The award is the second of James' career as she was also honored by the league on March 15 last year for her efforts in the Masked Rider Invitational. No other Tech player has received a weekly award since then.
James becomes the first Red Raider in school history to receive the Player of the Week distinction twice. She also joins Amanda Renfro as the only Tech players to earn a weekly award multiple times in a career as Renfro earned Pitcher of the Week accolades five times over the course of the 1998-01 seasons.
The Dallas, Texas native hit .409 over the weekend to go along with nine RBI as Tech went a perfect 6-0 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas. Tech defeated three teams in the tournament that made a NCAA Regional last year in Long Beach State, Portland State, and DePaul along with Ohio State who was receiving votes in the top 25 rankings.
The junior slugged .727 after totaling 16 bases off nine hits. She hit a three-run homer to jump-start a five-run first inning against Portland State and then hit her final dinger in the finale against Utah State.
James finished the weekend tied for the Big 12 lead in home runs and is also among leaders in hits, RBI, slugging percentage and total bases.
