LUBBOCK, Texas - Aloha state poses challenging schedule

It's not all sand and sun for Texas Tech softball as the Red Raiders travel to Honolulu, Hawai'i for the Spring Fling Hawai'i Tournament March 12-15.

Tech will face Maine to open the action Wed., March 12 at 7 p.m. CT. Thursday, the Red Raiders will get a peak at Texas at 7 p.m. before conference play begins. Friday's slate carries North Carolina and No. 16/16 Hawai'i at 7 and 9 p.m., respectively.

Scouting Maine
The Black Bears are having a rough go of things early in the season, having gone 0-16 to this point. Ashley Waters leads the team with a .286 avg. to go along with two home runs and four RBI. Whitney Spangler paces Maine with a team-leading eight RBI, while Jenna Balent leads the squad with a 3.20 ERA in the circle.

Scouting Texas
The Longhorns have been in and out of the Top 25 polls all season. They are currently among those teams receiving votes. Five Texas players are currently hitting over .300, led by Loryn Johnson's .360 avg., six home runs and 14 RBI. Megan Denny is a possible All-American candidate and carries a 9-3 record with 115 strikeouts in just over 64 innings pitched. The Longhorns are coached by Connie Clark in her 13th season at the helm.

Scouting the Tarheels
North Carolina started the season ranked in the Top 25 and is now among the first teams receiving votes. The Tar Heels boast three players that hit a .350 clip or higher, led by Megan Troup's .370 avg. and 18 RBI. Jennfier Jacobs paces UNC in the power department with five home runs. Danielle Spaulding boasts a 0.85 ERA in the circle, while fellow hurler Lisa Norris carries a 1.25 ERA.

Scouting Hawai'i
The Rainbows are currently ranked No. 16 overall in both polls. Hawai'i has four players hitting .350 or higher, led by Kate Robinson's .420 average. Robinson also leads the team with eight home runs and 20 RBI. Kate Robinson leads the Rainbows in the circle with a 1.50 ERA. Coutney Baughman has eight wins.

Tech vs. Maine
The Red Raiders and Black Bears have met two times previously, both in February 2001. Tech won both those meetings by scores of 6-2 each time.

Tech vs. Texas
The two in-state foes have met 21 times previously coming into this weekend. The Longhorns lead the series 17-4, having won the last four meetings... The last time Tech met Texas on a neutral site was 2000 and the Red Raiders prevailed 8-4 at the Big 12 Tournament. The two also met in Honolulu, Hawai'i earlier that year and Tech won that contest 4-0.

Tech vs. North Carolina
The Tar Heels and Tech have met just once previously, a 2-1 UNC win on March 14, 2003.

Tech vs. Hawaii
Hawaii and Tech will meet for just the second time Friday. The Rainbows won the previous meeting 6-0 on their home field. Tech vs. Maine The Red Raiders and Black Bears have met two times previously, both in February 2001. Tech won both those meetings by scores of 6-2 each time.

Twelve of the Red Raiders' losses this season have come against teams that are either ranked in the Top 25 or have been receiving votes... five losses have come by two runs or less.

California Crushing
Tech had three games with seven or more runs at the Stanford Classic last weekend. The Red Raiders had seven against Campbell and 11 and 8, respectively, against the College of Charleston... The Red Raiders roped out a season-best 13 hits against the C of C Sunday.
