James Named Big 12 Player of the Week|
March 15, 2011
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech claimed its third-straight Big 12 weekly accolade Tuesday as Sandy James was named the conference Player of the Week after hitting .667 at the plate while smashing six home runs and driving in 20 RBIs.
It marks the first weekly award for James as she joins teammates Logan Hall and Cydney Allen as Player of the Week recipients this season. Hall earned the honor on March 1st while Allen followed just a week ago on March 8th.
In Tech's eight games last week, James was 12-for-18 at the plate and was a driving force for a Tech offense that is nearing several school records. Her six home runs moved her into a tie with Allen for the team lead with 10, while her 36 RBIs trail only Hall on the squad.
James finished with four RBIs in three separate games, including both of Tech's wins in its doubleheader sweep of New Mexico. She also crushed her first career grand slam in the Saturday win over Evansville as the Red Raiders closed the Masked Rider Invitational 5-1 overall and 29-1 on the season.
Baylor's Whitney Canion claimed the league's Pitcher of the Week honors. Prior to this season, Tech had only four players - Kim Martinez (1997), Shauna Briggs (2000), Kristi Robles (2002), and Elyssa Sigala (2004) - earn the player of the week accolade.
The 21st-ranked Red Raiders wrap non-conference action this week in Clearwater, Fla. for the USF The Game Tournament. Tech will face Colorado State at 10 a.m. (CT) Thursday in non-tournament action before opening the tournament at 4:30 p.m. (CT) Friday against Jacksonville.
