Softball Team Gears Up for Final Home Games

LUBBOCK, Texas - The #19 Texas Tech Red Raider softball team will wrap up their 1998 home season as they host Baylor in a doubleheader on Saturday. Game time is noon at the Berl Huffman Complex.
The first Red Raider softball senior class will be honored prior to the games. Pitcher Danielle Brady, pitcher Jenny Cannon, outfielder Denise Jackson, catcher Jessica Karenke and infielder Kim Tillett will all be recognized for their contributions over the past three seasons.
"This will be a very special day for our softball team. We have five athletes who have helped take this program from a less than memorable beginning to a national ranking," Texas Tech Head Coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.
Baylor is led by freshman Naomi Fitzgerald who is hitting .320 with 49 hits in 153 at bats. Sophomore Bri Chambliss leads the team in RBIs with 24, while junior Tori Birk has a team high eight doubles. Stacey Allison is the team's pitching leader with an ERA of 1.65 and an overall record of 10-11. The right hander from Houston has 131 strikeouts in 148.1 innings pitched.
"Baylor has a good team. We need to have a good game both offensively and defensively in order to win. Our focus and intensity needs to be high throughout the series," Gillispie said.
Baylor holds a 7-0 series record over Tech. The last meeting between the two teams occurred on May 2, 1997 in the Big 12 Conference Tournament. Baylor claimed a 1-0 victory.
Texas Tech currently has a season mark of 40-16 and is fifth in the Big 12 Conference with a record of 6-6. The Red Raiders are led in hitting by sophomore Christina Munoz, who has a .395 average. Freshman Sandy Butler is close behind with a .349 and is leading the team and Big 12 Conference in hits with 65. On the mound, freshman Amanda Renfro has a 1.30 ERA and has accumulated 211 strikeouts in 209.1 innings of work. She has a 19-10 overall mark and a 5-4 Big 12 record.
