April 25, 2000

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech designated player Shauna Briggs has been named the Big 12 Softball Player of the Week for the week ending April 23, according release from the conference office earlier today. Briggs' selection marks the third time this season a Red Raider has earned such an honor. Pitcher Amanda Renfro has won the Pitcher of the Week award on two occasions in 2000.

Briggs, a designated player and catcher from Herald, Calif., hit a solid .667 (4-for-6) in a pair of games against Missouri last weekend. Against one of the best pitching staffs in the Big 12, Briggs exploded for a team-high four RBI. She blasted a two-run home run in Tech's 9-1 win against Missouri Saturday as she went 2-for-three at the plate. On Sunday she played her first game of the season at the catcher position. She once again collected two hits in three plate appearances, including a two-run double in the 6-5 win over the Tigers. For the week Briggs scored three runs and had a 1.333 slugging percentage. She has played in 43 games this season, mainly as designated player, and is hitting .242 on the year and is second on the team with 17 RBI

Texas Tech, 16-32 (5-8), is at Iowa State, 15-23(3-12), Saturday.
