DALLAS - Top performers on the field also are among the elite in the classroom as the league office announced its 62-member Softball Academic All-Big 12 team Thursday. Eight Red Raiders were listed, the second most in the conference behind Baylor's 11. Sophomore Paula Workman was one of just four nominees to achieve a 4.0 grade point average.

These student-athletes will be part of the third Big 12 Softball Tournament which begins April 30 when No. 8 seed Iowa State takes on No. 9 Missouri at 5 p.m. No. 7 Texas A&M will face No. 10 Baylor at 7:30 p.m. The losers of those contests will be eliminated while the winners will face the rest of the field in double-elimination rounds May 1 through May 3. Contests on May 1 and May 2 start at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. The championship contest is set for 2 p.m. on May 3.

Nominated by the directors of student-athlete support services and the athletic media relations directors, members of the all-academic teams have posted at least a 3.0 grade point average either cumulative or the previous two academic semesters and are regulars on their teams. First-team honorees are regulars who have at least a 3.2 grade point average, while those student-athletes with grade point averages of between 3.0 and 3.19 are listed as honorable mention.

Special recognition goes to four student-athletes who were nominated with 4.0 grad point averages. Iowa State freshman Kristin Ferguson, Kansas sophomore Katie Malone, Oklahoma freshman Mandy Fulton, and Texas Tech sophomore Paula Workman were each nominated with perfect 4.0 GPAs.

Many of the Softball Academic All-Big 12 Team are also among the elite on the coaches' All-Big 12 Team for 1998, also announced Thursday at the pre-tournament banquet in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Big 12 Player of the Year Ali Viola of Nebraska heads the list of the double honorees in 1998. In addition to her academic accolades, the senior is also the first-team All-Big 12 shortstop. In all, half of the All-Big 12 squad, which consists of 36 players total, are also honored for their classroom work. First-team all-conference members on the academic all-league team include Kansas' Sara Holland, Missouri's Wendy Harrison, Nebraska's Viola, Oklahoma's Ashley Barrett, Texas' Nikki Cockrell and Jodi Reeves, and Texas Tech's Sandra Butler. Second-team All-Big 12 selections on the academic all-league team include Iowa State's Michelle Junod, Missouri's Stephanie Falk, Stacy Gemeinhardt, and Chrisy Skouby, Nebraska's Jamie Fuente, Jenny Smith, Oklahoma's Lisa Carey, Lana Moran, Oklahoma State's Michelle Singer, Shannon Sullivan, and Texas' Tiffiny Valdehueza.
