Red Raider softball team awaits NCAA Tournament news|
May 8, 1998
LUBBOCK, Texas - After a week of waiting, wondering and analyzing, the #17 Texas Tech softball team will learn whether or not they have made it into the 1998 NCAA Softball Championships.
The team will gather Sunday in the Lettermans Lounge to watch the pairings and playing sites announced in a live press conference beginning at 8 p.m.
"We are all really excited. This has been a great season for us and we are looking forward to it continuing," Texas Tech senior catcher Jessica Karenke said.
In only their third year of existence, the Red Raiders finished the 1998 season with a 45-19 overall mark. They finished fourth in Big 12 play and fifth in the Big 12 Conference Tournament. Tech is currently ranked fifth in the Midwest Region and 17th in the nation.
"We have a great chance of making the NCAA tournament. Prior to conference play, we had some big wins that really gave our team some credibility. That along with playing in one of the toughest conferences in the nation should really help us," Texas Tech Head Coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.
The NCAA Softball Championships will be comprised of 32 teams playing in a double-elimination format. Four teams will compete at each site for a chance to attend the College World Series held at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. on May 21-25.
