May 18, 1998

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech softball player Paula Workman has been named to the 1998 GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America District VI University Division Softball Team. The sophomore from Austin was one of eleven athletes chosen to the squad.

A dietetics major, Workman has maintained a 4.0 GPA for the past four semesters. She was honored earlier this season with the Dr. Margaret E. Wilson Academic Achievement Award, selected to the Academic All-Big 12 first team and named to the President's Honor Roll twice.

This season Workman started in 57 of Tech's 64 games. She had a team high seven homeruns and an overall batting average of .310. In the field, Workman notched 68 putouts while leading the team in assists with 132.

"This is a great honor for Paula. She is a shining example of what a student-athlete should be. She is a fierce competitor on the field and in the classroom. We expect more great things out of her in the coming years," Texas Tech Head Coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.
