Martinez Named NFCA All-Midwest
Texas Tech senior infielder Kim Martinez was named to the All-Midwest Region Second Team today by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). She earned the same honor two years ago before sitting our last season while competing with the women's basketball team.
Martinez has made 61 starts in 62 games this season and is second on the team in batting with a .294 average entering NCAA regional competition tomorrow at Fresno State. The 5-foot-9 Sacramento, Calif., native has 55 hits on the season and leads the Big 12 with 15 doubles. She also leads Tech with 11 home runs. Martinez was named to the All-Big 12 Second team last week. The Lady Raiders are in Fresno, Calif., this week, making the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Tech joins defending national champion Fresno State, South Carolina, Stanford, Pacific and Florida A&M in the regional. The No. 5-seed Lady Raiders open the event against No. 2-seed South Carolina on Thur., May 20, at 7 p.m. (CT).
