LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech softball standout Adriana Perez has been named to the Mexican National Team roster for this week's General Tire World Cup of Softball held at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, California.
Perez, who starred at Tech for two seasons from 2011-12, will play first base for Team Mexico when the event officially begins later this evening with an exhibition game against the U.S. National Team.
"Playing for Team Mexico is a dream come true," said Perez, who ranked among the Tech all-time home run leaders in just two seasons. "I'm honored to represent this country for the World Cup and to continue my softball career. This will be an event I will remember for many, many years."
This will be Perez' second stint with the Mexican National Team since joining the organization last December. Perez previously traveled to Cuba with the team earlier this year for a series of games.
Following tonight's exhibition game, Team Mexico will face the Philippines, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Venezuela and the U.S. in pool play action. Saturday's 12 p.m. CT first pitch against the U.S. will air live nationally on ESPN2.
The five games of pool play will determine seeds for Sunday's final day of action. The championship game, the first of four contests for Sunday, will be played at 12 p.m. CT between the top two seeds on ESPN.
Perez will continue to play with Team Mexico following the World Cup as she is currently slated for trips to Canada and the Netherlands as well.
The Lancaster, California native was a .315 career hitting during her two seasons with the Red Raiders. Perez, who transferred to Tech from Antelope Valley College prior to her junior season, still ranks among the Tech career leaders in several offensive categories, including home runs (third), RBI (eighth) and batting average (eighth).
The American Softball Association (ASA) will provide live stats and a video feed of every game from the World Cup of Softball. Links for each game can be found here.
