LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball program held its first team practice of the fall Monday afternoon with a three-hour workout at Rocky Johnson Field.
After three-straight trips to the postseason, the Red Raiders begin the fall with several new faces around the diamond after 12 newcomers joined the program at the start of the semester.
"It's exciting to be back and have such a new group," fourth-year head coach Shanon Hays said. "This fall is big for us because we have 12 new players and we need to see where they fit. We're going to have a lot of competition for positions, and I'm interested to see how our infield pans out. Our work in the fall will make a big impact when we get to next spring."
Hays will be looking to replace eight seniors, including five position starters, off last season's squad that finished 41-17 overall and advanced to a NCAA Regional for a school-record third consecutive year.
Even with several departures, Tech still returns a bulk of its offense from a year ago in three-through-five hole hitters Sandy James, Mikey Kenney and Adriana Perez. Cara Custer and Brittany Talley also return to boost the pitching rotation as the duo combined for all but four of Tech's wins a year ago.
The Red Raiders will play eight exhibition games this fall, beginning Sept. 28 against Howard Junior College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field.
