LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team opened its fall slate with a 12-1 rout of Western Texas College Friday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
The Red Raiders exploded with five runs in the first before coming back to post a four-run inning in the third. Samantha Camello led off a three-run fifth with a double to center as Texas Tech used its entire roster, including all 12 newcomers, in the game.
"I thought this was a good start for us this fall," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "We hit the ball fairly well today and got good innings out of our pitchers and that's what we will need this spring. I was glad we were able to get everyone a turn through the lineup and that's a big part of what the fall is about."
Shelby Johnson led the Red Raiders with a 3-for-3 debut at the plate as the junior college transfer also swiped a pair of bases and drove in one off a RBI single in the third.
Western Texas plated its only run in the sixth when the two teams started each inning with a runner on first base. The Lady Westerners finished with just four hits over seven innings.
Brittany Talley earned the start for the Red Raiders in the circle as the lefty struck out three in two innings before giving way to Cara Custer, who stepped in to strike out the side in the third. Gretchen Aucoin and Shannon Carrico worked the final three innings in relief to close out the game.
The Red Raiders continue their fall schedule next Friday when Howard Junior College travels to Lubbock for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch. The Oct. 2 regularly-scheduled game against Odessa College has been pushed back to Oct. 9 when Texas Tech also plays Lubbock Christian.
