LUBBOCK, Texas - Mikey Kenney led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run before Sandy James connected on a grand slam an inning later to lead Texas Tech to a 12-5 victory over Howard College Friday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.

The victory improves the Red Raiders to 2-0 so far in fall ball action as Tech routed Western Texas, 12-1, in its opener a week ago.

"We swung the bats pretty well today and had a couple big hits early from Mikey (Kenney) and Sandy (James)," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "I think we found a few areas we need to work on but I like how we've competed at the plate. We'll look to continue to get better as this fall season carries on."

James' grand slam highlighted a six-run second inning for the Red Raiders as Gretchen Aucoin also added a two-run double. Tech opened the frame with three-straight singles from Taylor Powell, Samantha Camello, and Lauran Bliss.

Camello finished 4-for-5 at the plate as the freshman led off the third with a double before knocking an RBI single up the middle an inning later. Shelby Johnson also came across in the third off a RBI single from James.

Anne Binschus added Tech's final run with a RBI double off the wall in left that easily scored Camello. Binschus finished 2-for-2 at the plate thanks to a two-out single in the seventh.

The Red Raiders once again used most of its pitching staff as Cara Custer, Brittany Talley and Aucoin all tossed two innings each before Tess McPherson closed the game in the seventh.

Howard led off the third with back-to-back hits to score a pair of runs and then put a run across in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Tech continues its fall season Tuesday afternoon against crosstown Lubbock Christian. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field.
