LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech closed a busy week with a doubleheader sweep of Midland College Friday evening at Rocky Johnson Field, routing the Chaparrals, 14-1, in the opener before rallying for an 8-6 victory in the finale.

The two wins improve the Red Raiders to 6-0 this fall with only two exhibition games remaining against cross-town Lubbock Christian on Tuesday and then Odessa College on a date to be determined.

"We had another good day at the plate and received some good innings from our young pitchers," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "We played primarily our new kids in the second game so it was nice to get them some experience while also resting most of our upperclassmen. We still have some work to do this fall but I like to see that we keep improving."

Adriana Perez led the Red Raiders in the opener as the senior connected on a two-out double in the first inning to score Mikey Kenney in the first of three RBI in the game. Perez finished 4-for-4 at the plate as she also notched RBI singles in both the third and fifth innings as well.

Samantha Camello and Nikki Dunlap sparked a five-run fifth as the two freshmen powered back-to-back one-out singles to set up Lauran Bliss, who drove a single to right to score both runners. Sandy James added a two-run double later in the frame as the Red Raiders broke open what was previously a 4-0 lead.

Tess McPherson earned the start for Tech in the circle as the freshman tossed three scoreless innings before giving way to Gretchen Aucoin, who gave up Tech's only run in her three innings of work. Brittany Talley worked around an error in the seventh to close the game.

Midland College bounced back with a four-run third inning in the second game to put the Red Raiders in an early hole. The Chaparrals added a run in both the fourth and sixth innings as well.

Dunlap sparked the Tech lineup composed mainly of freshmen with a leadoff double to start a three-run fourth inning for the Red Raiders. She'd later score off a RBI single from Aucoin, who also eventually came around to score in the inning along with Chandler Moore.

McPherson, who moved to the outfield for the finale, jump-started the fifth with a leadoff triple to left field. Camello drove her in soon after with an infield single before Aucoin added her second RBI of the game with a two-out double.

Emily Cooper knocked in Bliss with a RBI double in the sixth to tie the game before McPherson connected on a RBI single later in the frame to give the Red Raiders their first lead. Katibeth King added a RBI double in the seventh to give Talley some breathing room as she pitched the final inning once again.

Shannon Carrico earned the game two start in the circle as the freshman gave up four runs in three innings of work before Cara Custer came on in relief to allow two runs in three innings as well.

The Red Raiders and Lubbock Christian are set for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch next Tuesday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
