Red Raiders Split Doubleheader to Close Fall Slate

Oct. 16, 2012

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball program closed its fall schedule Tuesday by splitting a doubleheader with cross-town Lubbock Christian as the Red Raiders took a 6-0 victory in the opener before later falling, 1-0, at Rocky Johnson Field.

The doubleheader split moved the Red Raiders to 7-1 as the fall season closes. Tech will continue to work out four times a week throughout the rest of the semester before returning in early January for preseason practices.

"We didn't play our best today but overall I like the progress we've made this fall," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "Lubbock Christian has a good ballclub and their pitcher had a good outing in the second game. We'll continue to get better and get ready for next spring."

Nikki Dunlap went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI to lead the Red Raiders in the opener as the freshman connected on a two-run single in the second and then followed with a RBI double in the sixth inning.

Her two-run single followed a Sandy James sacrifice fly in the first that plated Mikey Kenney. It was the first of three RBI for James, who also belted a two-run homer in the third to give the Red Raiders a 5-0 lead.

The pitching combination of Cara Custer and Tess McPherson shut down the Lady Chaps over seven innings as LCU totaled just three hits in the game, all of which came over Custer's five innings.

In the second game, Hays went with a lineup composed mainly of newcomers as Tech was held to just five hits in the game. The Red Raiders put runners in scoring position in both the fourth and sixth innings before recording consecutive outs to end the frame.

After LCU plated its only run in the top of the seventh, McPherson put Tech in position to tie the game with a one-out double. She was stranded, however, as Tech popped up twice to end the game.

The Red Raiders will open the 2013 season Feb. 8-10 at the Sportco Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. The full 2013 schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
