LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech softball coach Shanon Hays announced Friday the signing of Lexie Elkins to a financial aid agreement in order to join the Red Raiders for the upcoming 2013 season.
Elkins, a catcher out of Victoria, Texas, will graduate from Victoria East High School in December and enroll at Texas Tech in January, giving the Red Raiders another solid option behind the plate.
"We are thrilled that Lexie has decided to graduate early and join us for this spring," Hays said. "She's an athletic, strong kid that we think can be very good for us behind the plate. She runs really well and has a lot of power which will give us another great option in the lineup. She should have a great career here at Texas Tech."
A three-year starter for the Titans, Elkins hit .598 as a junior with 51 RBI en route to leading Victoria East to the playoffs for the second-straight season. She was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year of district 25-4A after ranking seventh in the state of Texas in RBI and in the top 20 for total hits. She also ranked 25th nationally in RBI as well.
She was also the Co-Newcomer of the Year of district 30-5A during her 2010 freshman season and followed up by being named the district Co-MVP as a sophomore. She also garnered honorable mention All-American accolades in 2011 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Elkins, who also played for the Houston Power Gold travel team, was selected to the first team all-region and all-area squads all three seasons while also earning honorable mention all-state honors following her sophomore and junior years.
Texas Tech will announce its full fall signing class in the upcoming days.
