Women's Tennis Travels to Big 12 Tournament
Faces OSU Thursday, Top-Seeded Texas Friday
LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech women's tennis team will play eighth-seeded Oklahoma State Thursday in the first round of the inaugural Big 12 Conference Tournament in Austin.
The tournament, which runs Thursday through Sunday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center at the University of Texas, will feature all 11 teams from the league that sponsor women's tennis.
Texas Tech (9-10 overall, 5-6 in the Big 12) tied for sixth-place in the final regular-season Big 12 standings and set a school record with its five conference victories this season. Previously, the most conference victories ever for a Texas Tech women's tennis team was four in 1982.
Texas Tech, seeded ninth in the tournament, defeated Oklahoma State 5-4 Saturday in Stillwater. A victory would place the Red Raiders against sixth-ranked Texas, the top seed in the tournament, in the second round on Friday.
"We are not satisfied with our sixth-place finish in the conference," said Director of Tennis Tim Siegel. "But, at the same time, we knew the Big 12 was going to be one of the toughest tennis conferences in the nation. Our team matured a great deal during the season and, hopefully, we can create some havoc in the Big 12 Tournament.
"There are good things to come from this women's tennis program and we are truly excited about the future of tennis at Texas Tech."
Texas, 36th-ranked Baylor, 21st-ranked Texas A&M and 38th-ranked Kansas are the top four seeds in the tournament. Each of the top four seeds received a bye in the first round.
