League-High Six Red Raiders Named to Big 12 Academic Team
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech placed a league-high six members on the first-team of the 1997 women's tennis Academic All-Big 12 Team, the league announced today. In addition, three Red Raiders were recognized on the honorable mention men's team, according to league officials.
The six Red Raider women earning first-team honors were senior Erika Fisher (Marketing/Management, Dallas, Texas), sophomore Carrie Helbing (Human Development, Wichita Falls, Texas), sophomore Misty Meyer (undecided, Abilene, Texas), freshman Lakshmi Ravindra (Pre-Law, Lake City, Fla.), freshman Sarada Ravindra (Pre-Med, Lake City, Fla.) and junior Christine Van Regenmorter (General Studies, Modesto, Calif.).
The Texas Tech women finished the season with a 10-11 overall record nad 5-6 Big 12 Confrence mark. The Red Raiders set a school record for conference wins with five and defeated four nationally-ranked teams during the season.
The three men recognized as honorable mention selections were sophomore Petar Danolic (Restarurant, Hotel and Intitutional Management, Zagreb, Croatia), senior Craig Gillam (Psychology, Abilene, Texas) and freshman Travis Wagner (Marketing, San Antonio, Texas).
The Texas Tech men finished the season with an 11-14 overall record and 4-5 conference mark. The Red Raiders won three of its final four regular-season matches and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four seasons.
Student-athletes were nominated through the directors of student-athlete support services and the sports information offices at each institution. To qualify, a student-athlete must have been a letterwinner in his or her spor with at least a 3.0 grade point average in the previous two academic terms or have a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Student-athletes with a 3.30 grade point average or better are considered first team and a 3.00 to 3.29 GPA are awarded honorable mention.
