Red Raiders Fall To Fifth-Ranked Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The fifth-ranked University of Texas women's tennis team defeated Texas Tech 7-2 in the first-ever Big 12 Conference women's tennis match and the season-opener for both teams today at the Athletic Training Center.

The Lady Longhorns won six singles matches and went on to win one doubles match to claim the victory.

Texas head coach Jeff Moore was very impressed with his team's performance.

"This was as good a start as we've ever had," said Moore. "I was impressed with every player. They all played with authority and confidence. This was a good omen for the future."

Texas Tech head coach Tim Seigel said it was a good sign Tech won two doubles matches.

"We took two doubles matches, and any time you beat Texas, you should be proud," Seigel said. "Texas is an outstanding team and they have a chance to win the national championship. I was very pleased with the effort we gave. The score was not indicative of how we played. Attitude is everything and weshowed a lot of it tonight."

Texas Tech is 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in the Big 12 while Texas is 1-0 and 1-0.

The Texas Tech women will next be in action Saturday against Tyler Junior College at 1:30 p.m. in the Athletic Training Center. The Tech men's team will also be in action Saturday against Tyler JC at 3:30 p.m. at the Lubbock Country Club. Admission to both matches is free to the public.
