Texas Tech Upsets 37th-ranked Colorado
Red Raiders Hand Lady Buffs First Big 12 Loss of the Season
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team won three tight three-set singles matches en route to a narrow 5-4 upset victory over 37th-ranked Colorado, handing the Lady Buffaloes their first Big 12 Conference match loss of the year today at the Athletic Training Center.
Texas Tech (6-8 overall, 3-4 in the Big 12) won four of six singles matches with freshman Amanda Earhart winning the only straight-set match, a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Colorado's Emily Smith at the No. 3 singles position. The setback was the first of the year for Colorado in the Big 12. It was also just the second loss of the season for the Lady Buffaloes' (10-2 overall, 2-1 in the Big 12).
"I was really proud of our effort today," said Texas Tech assistant coach Mary Dailey. "It is so crucial for us to have a lead going into doubles, so Christine's (Van Regenmorter) win at the No. 6 slot was big for us. Colorado has a really good team and we are really thrilled with this win. I am really excited for our team today."
Texas Tech junior transfer Christine Van Regenmorter outlasted Colorado's Mary Mahon 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to give the Red Raiders a 4-2 lead heading into the doubles portion of the dual match. Texas Tech senior Eva Eguiguren's 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Sandra Fisher and freshman Lakshmi Ravindra's 6-2, 0-6, 6-0 win over Colorado's Anna Bek were the Red Raiders other three-set singles victories. Eguiguren and Earhart clinched the victory with an 8-4 win over Aggie and Anna Beck of Colorado.
Texas Tech's next match is scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 25 against North Texas in the Texas Tech Athletic Training Center.
