Tech Women's Tennis Advances in Big 12 Tournament
AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team won its first-ever conference tournament dual match with a 5-1 victory over Oklahoma State today in the first round of the inaugural Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Tournament at tahe Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Since 1988, when the Southwest Conference changed formats to include team vs. team dual match play, Texas Tech had never won a first round match in a conference tournament. The Raiders also set a record earlier this season with its fifth conference win, which, ironically, also came at the hands of Oklahoma State in Stillwater.
"This a landmark day for Texas Tech women's tennis," said Director of Tennis Tim Siegel. "We are working hard to build a nationally-competitive program and that does not happen overnight. This is a significant step in that process. I am very proud for our team."
The doubles matches were suspended after Texas Tech won four of the six singles matches and one doubles match by default to clinch the victory. Tech's Misty Meyer won the number six singles slot also by default.
The Red Raiders improved to 10-10 overall, while Oklahoma State, ranked 40th in the nation, fell to 8-12. Texas Tech will face regular-season Big 12 champion Texas Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
