Jan. 26, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - Launching their spring season on a positive note, the Texas Tech Women's Tennis Team rolled over both Texas State and Texas-Pan American today at the McLeod Tennis Center. Notorious for a its strong doubles lineup, the Lady Raiders continued their dominance by clinching the doubles points in both matches. The No. 2 pair of Samantha van der Drift and Ingrid Ballus led their team in doubles play, going 2-0. At No. 1, the duo of senior Janet Durham and freshman Kelsy Garland came up short against the Bobcat's Andrea Giraldo and Lainy Chafitz, 8-5, but quickly retaliated against the Broncos' Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima winning 8-3. The No. 3 spot also garnered wins from two Tech pairings, Maria Jose Andres and Kerryn Potgieter over TSU's Mackenzie Farmer and Ashley Ellis, 8-4, and freshmen Leah Roberts and Simone Templeton over Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu, 8-5. With the momentum carrying over from doubles, Tech took their game a step further by ending the day 14-0 in singles play. Lubbock-native Garland was the first Red Raider to win both singles matches, followed by sophomore veteran Potgieter. Against Texas State freshman Simone Templeton clinched the win for Tech, 6-1, 6-2, while van der Drift sunk in the victory over UTPA's Oliveira 7-6(2), 6-0, in the No. 1 position.
