No. 21 Lady Raiders Upend No. 29 Rice, 5-2
Rashmi Teltumbde won both her singles and doubles matches against Rice on Saturday. January 26, 2013 WACO, Texas – No. 21 Texas Tech cruised to a 5-2 win over No. 29 Rice in the opening round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Baylor’s Hurd Tennis Center. Baylor was one of 16 sites nationally to host the qualifying rounds for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. No. 15 Baylor will now meet the Lady Raiders on Sunday at 2 p.m. for a spot in the prestigious event in Charlottesville, Va. from Feb. 8-11. Caroline Starck and Elizabeth Ullathorne rolled to a fast 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles to get things going for the Lady Raiders. Rice answered at No. 1, as the No. 50 team of Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath bested Tech’s Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, 8-6. The point came down to Texas Tech’s No. 33 tandem of Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde, who bested Katie Gater and Stephanie Nguyen, 8-5. Teltumbde then gave the Lady Raiders a 2-0 lead, as she won in straight sets over Gater at No. 3 singles. The Owls answered, as No. 50 Beazant edged No. 49 Adams, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Sandra Dynka gave Texas Tech a 3-1 lead with three matches still on the court, when she topped Solomiya Zinko, 6-2, 7-5. Rice cut the lead to 3-2, when Harmath defeated Kilgo, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), but the stead play of Starck secured the win with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Nguyen at No. 6. Ullathorne added the final point of the day with a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 win over Kimberly Anicete. ITA Kickoff Weekend
