HOUSTON, Texas - No. 21 Texas Tech took the early lead, traded it off to No. 32 Rice, before the steady play of the middle of the lineup carried the Lady Raiders to a 4-2 victory against the Owls on Sunday at the Jack Hess Tennis Center.
The first point of the day went to Texas Tech, when the Lady Raiders' Elizabeth Ullathorne and Caroline Starck pulled out an 8-6 triumph over Daniela Trigo and Solomiya Zinko at No. 3. It was set up after the schools split No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Rice then took the lead with a pair of quick wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
No. 84 Natalie Beazant topped Texas Tech's Rashmi Teltumbde, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Rice's No. 111 Dominique Harmath topped Tech's No. 80 Samantha Adams, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2, giving the Owls a 2-1 lead in the team score.
Lady Raider Kenna Kilgo evened the score with a straight-set win over Rice's Katie Gater, 6-4, 6-2. Starck followed suit with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Zinko for a 3-2 team lead.
Ullathorne picked up the match-clinching victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Liat Zimmermann to give the Lady Raiders their third straight win over the nationally-ranked owls.
Texas Tech continues its eight-match road trip that spans three states and five cities on Thursday when it takes on No. 60 Auburn in Auburn, Ala., and Friday when it faces No. 9 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
