MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 21 Texas Tech suffered its second straight loss on Sunday, as the Lady Raiders fell to No. 19 Auburn, 4-3, in the third place match at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic at the Lagoon Park Tennis Center.
Ironically, it is the first time Texas Tech has had back-to-back losses since losing to Auburn and Alabama on consecutive days last season. The Lady Raiders lost to Alabama yesterday, 4-2.
Auburn opened play by sweeping the doubles point. The Tigers are 26-3 in doubles this season. No. 15 Emily Flickinger and Pleun Burgmans topped #37 Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, 6-3, while Jen Pfeifler and Jackie Kasler cruised past Lynn Kiro and Claire Williams, 6-1.
At No. 6 singles, Kasler then ran past Samantha Czarniak Rego, 6-1, 6-2 to give Auburn a 2-0 lead.
Texas Tech answered when No. 110 Nikki Sanders defeated Paula de Man, 6-4, 6-1, followed by Adams' 6-3, 6-3 win over Michala Kucharova to tie the match 2-2.
The Lady Raiders then took a 3-2 lead when Kiro picked up a straight-set win over Reka Muller, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4.
The Tigers evened the ledger when No. 68 Emily Flickinger won 6-4, 6-4 over Rashmi Teltumbde at No. 2. That left the match to be decided at No. 1 singles.
No. 32 Burgmans took the first set over No. 15 Kilgo, 6-1, but Kilgo answered with 7-5 win to send the match to a pro set third set. Burgmans outlasted Kilgo and in the final frame, 10-6, to secure the win and give Auburn the final 4-3 margin.
The Lady Raiders must now turn their focus to Big 12 play, as Texas Tech travels to Waco on Sunday to face No. 15 Baylor (8-3) in the league opener.
