Feb. 27, 1998
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team defeated No. 47 Oklahoma 6-3 on Friday in the Athletic Training Center. The Red Raiders recorded four singles victories and two doubles wins to move to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference.
"I don't know if I've ever been more proud of a team, either men's or women's, in all of the years I've coached," said head coach Tim Siegel. "We lost to Oklahoma last year and they're a better team this year. Amanda (Earhart) and Christine (Van Regenmorter) played exceptionally well, and Zana (Zlebnik) had another big win, defeating the No. 30 player. This was as big a win as we've had in a long time."
Freshman Zana Zlebnik defeated another nationally ranked player in Oklahoma's No. 30 Raluca Gheorghe. Zlebnik earned the No. 1 slot victory in three sets, winning 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 to move to 5-0 in singles competition on the season. Amanda Earhart claimed a win in the No. 2 singles, defeating Viviana Mracnova from Oklahoma 7-5 in the tie breaker and 6-2. Also earning wins for the Red Raiders were Sharda Ravindra in No. 4 singles and Christine Van Regenmorter in No. 5 singles.
In doubles competition, the combination of Zlebnik and Earhart remained undefeated, winning 8-3 in the No. 1 spot. Lakshmi Ravindra and Van Regenmorter also moved to 5-0 in doubles on the season.
The Texas Tech women will continue Big 12 play in Nebraska on Sunday at 10 a.m.
