LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 19 Texas Tech proved why they are one of the nation’s top squads on Friday, as the Lady Raiders cruised past SMU, 6-1, at the McLeod Tennis Center.
It was just the third-ever win for Texas Tech over SMU. Texas Tech's first win came in 1981, when the Lady Raiders stunned No. 16 SMU, 5-4, in Dallas. The Mustangs would roll off 19 consecutive victories before Texas Tech snapped the streak as No. 73 Texas Tech upset No. 63 SMU, 5-3, in Dallas.
The Lady Raiders swept doubles play to start the day. Injury forced the SMU to play singles with just five players, give Texas Tech a quick 2-0 lead.
SMU’s No. 98 Edyta Cieplucha added a quick point for the Mustangs, as she upended Texas Tech’s No. 115 Samantha Adams, 6-3, 6-1.
“SMU is not a bad team,” said Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty. “At the top end of their lineup, they are as good as any team we have played this season. This was a quality win for us and we just have to continue to improve each time out.”
Texas Tech returns to the courts on Sunday to face Wisconsin at the McLeod Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
