LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 35 Texas A&M used a final victory at No. 2 doubles to secure a 5-4 victory against No. 66 ranked Texas Tech in Big 12 Conference women's tennis action Friday at Lubbock's Municipal Tennis Complex. The loss drops Texas Tech to 6-3 on the season and 3-3 in the Big 12. The Red Raiders host Nebraska tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at Lakeridge Country Club. Texas A&M held a 4-3 lead heading into the final two doubles matches- No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles. Texas Tech pulled into a tie at 4-4 with a victory from freshman Zana Zlebnik and sophomore Amanda Earhart at No. 1 doubles but the Aggies' No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore Kathryn Scott and freshman Eva Marcial held off a Red Raider charge with a 9-7 victory and decisive match victory.
"I'm proud of our effort," Texas Tech director of tennis Tim Siegel said. "It hurts to lose and it's painful to have come so close to almost beating the 35th ranked team in the country. It came down to No. 2 doubles and it just didn't go our way today. We've been on both sides of the close ones this year. Tomorrow will be a true test for us in Nebraska."
Texas Tech freshman Zana Zlebnik (Maribor, Slovenia), who was recently named the Big 12 Women's Player of the Month, continued her nine-match winning streak as she improved to 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in Big 12 competition with a 7-6, 6-2 victory against Texas A&M's Lisa Dingwall.
