LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Texas Tech women's tennis team knocked off the Kansas Jayhawks today, 6-1. The Lady Raiders struggled in doubles action losing all three matches, but were able to come back strong and sweep the singles court. Tech moves to an overall spring record of 6-3 and 2-2 in Big 12 Conference play.

In singles action, senior Irina Tereschenko knocked off Courtney Steinbock, 6-3, 6-4, in the first position, while senior Kendall Brooks defeated Emily Haylock, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, in the second position. In the third position, sophomore Tara Browning bested Christine Skoda, 6-2, 6-2, while freshman Lakann Wagley defeated Kristen Steinbock, 7-6, 7-5. Sophomore Katja Kovacic defeated Brittany Brown, 6-0, 7-6, in the fifth position, and freshman Hristiyana Gocheva knocked off Luiza Loureiro, 7-6, 6-1, in the sixth position to round out singles play.

In doubles action, the Lady Raiders were unsuccessful, losing all three matches. In the first position, Brooks and Tereschenko were defeated by C. Steinbock and K. Steinbock, 8-4. In the second position, Browning and Kovacic lost to Haylock and Ashley Filberth, 8-5, while Wagley and Gocheva were defeated by Brown and Skoda, 8-6, in the third position.

"I think the team fought hard, and Kansas had a lot of momentum going into singles," said head coach Cari Groce. "They were very pumped up winning the doubles point and we knew we would have to put a stop that. The players fought hard, and things started to roll for us, and we were able to sweep all six singles."

The Lady Raiders will play its next match in Lubbock Friday, March 19, at 12:30 p.m. against Texas-El Paso.
