Norman, Okla. – No. 33 Texas Tech picked up a huge win Friday, as the Lady Raiders toppled No. 17 Oklahoma, 5-2, at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
“I am so proud of this group,” said Texas Tech head coach Todd Petty. “OU is a very well coached and classy group. We had to dig really deep for this win. Bea (Machado Santos) was a star today. She was thrown in the fire and really calmed herself to get the win.”
Texas Tech started the day with a huge doubles win over Oklahoma, who entered the match winners of 11 of 12 doubles points this season.
Oklahoma’s #76 tandem of Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchey upset the Tech duo of Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. But soon after, Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde dropped OU’s Emma Devine and Morgan Chumney, 8-4, while the freshman combo of Machado Santos and Lynn Kiro ousted Hermon Brhane and Zita Engbroks, 8-5, to win the point for Texas Tech.
Kiro then cruised by Emma Devine, 6-1, 6-1, to give Texas Tech a 2-0 lead.
But Oklahoma answered with Chumney’s upset of No. 117 Sanders, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 3 and then Brhane picked up a straight set win over Kilgo, 6-4, 6-4, to even the score at 2-2.
At No. 5,, Adams held on for a 6-2, 7-6 win over Abbi Melrose, followed by Machado Santos’ 6-4, 7-6 victory over Engrboks at No. 6. The two points secured the victory for the Lady Raiders.
Teltumbde closed out the win with a three-set victory over Lancaster at No. 2, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Lady Raiders now travel to Stillwater, Okla., to face No. 30 Oklahoma State (7-5, 1-0 Big 12) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
