No. 3 Bears Blank Lady Raiders, 7-0
March 22, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match today to the No. 3 nationally-ranked Baylor Bears, 7-0. The Lady Raiders will return to the McLeod Tennis Center to host a pair of matches against Missouri and Colorado beginning March 28. Tech's doubles gave the Bears a run for their money as they narrowly missed two wins at No. 2 and 3 by a 9-7 margin. Baylor's No. 54-ranked pair Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk edged the Lady Raiders' Brenna Jackson and Kerryn Potgieter at No. 2, 9-7. Moving in for the clincher was the Bear's No. 4-ranked Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova, 8-5, over Tech's Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift. Moving into singles Tech struggled to find a break as they were forced to play without their No. 1 player van der Drift due to illness. Three ranked Bears took advantage with consecutive wins at No. 2, 3 and 4. Tech's Laura Ring made her debut into the line-up at No. 6, but lost in straight sets to Karolina Filipiak giving Baylor their fourth point and the match. Rounding out the day Baylor's No. 23-ranked senior Zemenova proved too much for Tech freshman Kelsy Garland at No. 1, winning 6-4, 6-2. Capping off the match in what looked like Tech's only chance to get on the scoreboard, Maria Jose Andres and Jelena Stanivuk split sets and were going head-to-head on court five. Despite her best efforts, Andres could not stall Stanivuk who walked away with the 6-3 win in the third.
