No. 20 Lady Raiders Run Streak To 16 Straight On Senior Day|
March 24, 2013
LUBBOCK, Texas – There was cold, wind and even a delay, but nothing could stop Senior Day, as No. 20 Texas Tech dismantled Iowa State in 93 minutes on Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The match was originally supposed to start at 1 p.m., but cold temperatures and even colder wind chills delayed the start until closer to 2:45 p.m.
Texas Tech went right to work, as the Lady Raiders began with singles and used six two-set wins to secure the victory. It was Texas Tech’s school-record 16th consecutive home win.
“I felt like we came out focused,” said Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty. “The girls wanted the send the seniors out with a win today and they did that. One through six, we played well and I couldn’t ask for more.”
For senior Caroline Starck, it was her 90th career singles win. She is the first player in the modern era to reach 90 wins in a career. The last player to reach 90 wins in a career was Annemarie Walson in 1988.
The trio will leave Texas Tech as the winningest senior class in the history of the program, including winning an incredible 86.5 percent of their matches played at home.
Due to the weather delay, Iowa State defaulted the doubles competition to Texas Tech.
No. 20 Texas Tech returns to action next Sunday at 1 p.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center, as the Lady Raiders face No. 35 Oklahoma State.
