LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team gets a big win against conference opponent, No. 50 Missouri. The Lady Raiders upset the Tigers, 4-3. Tech is now 5-8 on it's spring season and 2-2 in Big 12 conference.

The Lady Raiders gained a lead early on in the match after winning two of their three doubles matches. At number two doubles, Cigdem Duru and Janet Durham defeated Yelena Olshanskaya and Erika Josbena, 8-3. In slot three, Erin Hunter and Katja Kovacic beat Hana Kraftova and Charlotte Bellis, 8-4. Tara Browning and Lakann Wagley fell at number one doubles to Katka Sevcikova and Carolyn Kramer, 8-3.

Tech came through in three of their singles matches. Tara Browning proved to be strong at number three defeating Yelena Olshanskaya, 6-4, 6-5. At position six, Lakann Wagley came out on top against Carolyn Kramer, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Janet Durham played tough stretching her matches into three. Durham won 6-1 in the first set, but lost to Hana Kraftova 2-6 in the second set. Durham was down in the third set, but came back to beat Kraftova in the clinch match, 6-1, 2-6, 6-5. The Lady Raiders lost at number one, four and five singles matches.

"We have been waiting for this," stated head coach Cari Groce. "This is a huge breakthrough for our team. They have worked hard and they knew if they stayed positive and kept working it would happen, they would come out with the win. These girls certainly deserve a big win like this against a Top 50 team."

 

 

The Lady Raiders will continue Big 12 action at home on Wednesday, March 30. Tech will face No. 9 Texas at 5 p.m. They will continue next weekend, Sat., April 2, and Sun., April 3. The Lady Raiders will face No. 52 Colorado at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday and Kansas at 11 a.m. on Sunday. All matches are scheduled to be played at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.
