LUBBOCK, Texas - The Women's Tennis team had a disappointing opening weekend match against Kansas at the Lubbock Country Club. Head Coach Sandy Collins said it was a very close match and a disappointing loss.

"We should have won. I knew it was going to be close after preparing this week and looking at their [Kansas] record. The win was there for the taking, but we didn't follow through. I think we have a good chance to win against Nebraska Sunday," she said.

The Lady Raiders wont three of the six singles matches, and lost the doubles point with only one win in three matches. Courtney Steinbock defeated Irina Tereschenko 5-7, 7-5, 7-6. Beverly Dawson defeated Paige Brown 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Kendall Brooks defeated Emily Haylock 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Christine Skoda defeated Anchen Lombard 6-4, 6-2. Kim Lorenz defeated Tara Browning 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Katja Kovacic defeated Kristen Steinbock 7-6, 5-7, 10-7.

The doubles tandem of Irina Tereschenko/Beverly Dawson was defeated by Haylock/K.Steinbock 8-5. Tara Browning/Kendall Brooks defeated C.Steinbock/Brown 9-8. Lorenz/Skota defeated Katja Kovacic/Anchen Lombard 8-3.

The women's tennis team returns to action 10 a.m. on Sunday. The team plans to compete at the McLeod Tennis Center, unless inclement weather arises. If they have to move inside, the team will return to the Lubbock Country Club for the conclusion of their at-home matches for the season.
