April 15, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas - No. 13 Texas (13-5, 6-0 Big 12) swept the bottom of the singles lineup to upend No. 22 Texas Tech (16-4, 6-1), 4-2, on Sunday morning at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Ironically, Sunday marked the first time this season that the Lady Raiders have lost at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles in the same match. Texas Tech's bottom three slots in the singles lineup had gone 47-5 until Sunday.
UT's No. 64 Krista Damino started the day with an early point for the Longhorns, as she picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tech's Elizabeth Ullathorne. Lady Raider Nikki Sanders then fell to Elizabeth Bedley, 6-2, 6-0 and Kenna Kilgo lost in straight sets to Lina Padegimaite, 6-4, 6-4, giving Texas a 3-0 lead early.
But the Lady Raiders battled back, as No. 120 Rashmi Teltumbde picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Noel Scott. Samantha Adams then followed suit with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) win over Texas All-American Aeriel Ellis, to pull the team score to 3-2 with one match still in play.
Caroline Starck, who pulled out the deciding point in Tech's epic win over No. 20 Texas A&M on Friday, was on center stage again. Stark, who was facing Texas' Cierra Gaytan Leach, lost the first set, 7-5, but answered with a come-from-behind win in the second set, 7-5. The drama was just as tense as Friday, but this time it was Leach who got the upper hand on Starck with a 6-4 victory in the third, giving Texas the 4-2 win over Texas Tech.
Doubles were not played Sunday due to the impending inclement weather in the Austin area.
Texas Tech returns for its final homestand this weekend. The Lady Raiders host No. 45 Missouri on Friday and Iowa State on Sunday.
