FORT WORTH, Texas - For the third straight season, No. 30 Texas Tech had advanced to the Big 12 Women's Tennis Championship semifinals, but for the third straight year the Lady Raiders came up short.
No. 14 Baylor took the doubles points and cruised to three straight-set singles matches to defeat Texas Tech, 4-0, on Saturday at the Friedman Tennis Center.
After not advancing past the quarterfinals for the first 15 years in the Big 12 Conference, Texas Tech has advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament. But the Lady Raiders have now fallen to Baylor twice and Texas once.
"You have to give credit to Baylor," said Lady Raider head coach Todd Petty. "They have been the physically better team both times we have played them."
Baylor captured the No. 1 doubles and followed with the No. 3 doubles to secure the first point of the match.
Blair Shankle then bested Nikki Sanders, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Alex Leatu then used a straight-set 6-3, 6-3 win over Samantha Adams to pull Baylor within one point of the win.
No. 83 Ema Burgic closed out the win for the Bears with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rashmi Teltumbde at No. 2 to put Baylor in the finals of the Big 12 Championships.
"I thought we had a great win on Friday," said Petty. "We didn't take a step forward this year and that is obviously disappointing, but we came out of this with a really good win and let's see what we can do in the NCAA Tournament."
Texas Tech will now await its seeding in the NCAA Championships on Tuesday when the governing body announces the 64 teams for the 2014 postseason tournament.
