MIDLAND, Texas – Texas Tech netter Nikki Sanders continued her workman-like effort on Friday at the Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational at the Midland Racquet Club, as the senior won a pair of matches to open the 2013-14 season.
Sanders, who is ranked No. 118 nationally and seeded eighth in the tournament, opened play with straight set 6-1, 6-2 win over UT-Arlington’s Angeles de los Rios. She followed it up with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kamilia Galieva of North Texas to advance to the third round.
Sanders has now won 13 straight matches, dating back to March 13 of last season. If you include the ITA Summer Circuit Event she won at Notre Dame in July, Sanders has won 19 straight matches.
Junior transfer Sarah Toti picked up a first round win over Monica Pieratt of Texas State, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. She was not as lucky in the second round as she fell to No. 49 and fifth-seeded Dominique Harmath of Rice, 6-4, 6-3.
All three freshmen – Claire Williams, Beatriz Machado Santos and Samantha Czarniak Rego, who were playing in their first collegiate match fell in the first round. Williams and Czarniak Rego rebounded for first round wins in the consolation bracket.
“It was a solid first day for us,” said associate head coach Hayden Perez. “We competed well in every match and they showed great fight. Nikki’s experience as a senior was evident and she showed great leadership. Sarah had a great day and I believe had a breakthrough in her game.
“The freshmen were a little nervous competing in their first college matches, but I thought they all fought hard and I was proud of the effort.”
Play resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Midland Racquet Club.
