Tech Women's Tennis Team Wrap Up Day One of Season Opener

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team opened the fall season today in El Paso, Texas, at the 2004 Miner Fall Invitational. Tech defeated New Mexico State, 5-2 and Abilene Christian University, 6-1. The Lady Raiders started strong by winning the doubles point against New Mexico State as junior Tara Browning and freshman Cigdem Duru defeated Leila Porobic and Sandra Mayr, 8-5. Junior Katja Kovacic teamed up with freshman Erin Hunter to beat Violiane Rollet and Anne Fagegaltier, 8-3, in the other doubles match. Tech continued to dominate in singles play as it won four of the six matches. In the No.1 position, Browning defeated Isabelle Mignot 6-1, 5-7, 10-2, while teammate Kovacic defeated Mayr 6-1, 6-3. Tech's newcomer and freshman Janet Durham won her first set 6-1 before Fagegaltier withdrew from the match due to an injury. The Lady Raiders showed no signs of letting up against ACU, as they swept the doubles matches and only lost one of the six matches in singles play. Freshmen Lakanne Wagley ( 6-0, 6-4) and Cigdem Duru beat their opponent in straight matches (6-2, 6-2) in straight matches. Tech tennis team will continue play tomorrow morning as it faces Lee College and UTEP.
