Lady Raiders Complete First Day at RCCI

The first day of competition at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas concluded with three Texas Tech players winning their opening round matches and two doubles teams advancing to play on Saturday.
Junior Natalie Leitch defeated Dina Pavlin (ACU) 6-2, 6-1 and then took on the tournament's top seed, Jelena Stanivuk (Baylor). Stanivuk won the first set, 6-2. Natalie came back strong to win the second set, 6-0. In the deciding tiebreaker, Stanivuk prevailed, 10-4 to advance.
Freshman Elizabeth Ullathorne lost her opening match (5-7) to TCU's Idunn Hertzberg, ranked 11th in Southwest Doubles and a key player on the Horned Frogs returning NCAA qualifying squad. Liz evened the match by winning the second set 6-2 before falling in the tiebreaker, 10-8.
Freshman Lorena Aviles defeated Macklin Ragan (Rice) in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0, before withdrawing from her second-round match due to a leg injury.
The Lady Raiders saw two of their four doubles teams advance the next round on Saturday. Stephanie Peana and Natalie Leitch won their match over Hertzberg and Babanova (TCU), 8-4. The freshman duo of Sandra Dynka and Lorena Aviles won the tiebreaker 8-6, to defeat Rice and Oates of Pepperdine, 8-7.
The women's round of 16 will begin at 9 AM on Saturday. Texas Tech's two advancing doubles teams will take the courts following singles play.
