LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team opened its first annual Scarborough Specialties Texas Tech Classic Friday morning at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas. Seven teams including Tech competed in the tournament.

The Lady Raiders came out swinging winning 12 singles matches and advancing all three doubles teams to Saturday's championship match. Tech only dropped one singles match all day.

The undefeated duo of junior Katja Kovacic and freshman Erin Hunter made quick work of New Mexico State's team of Isabelle Mignot and Nicole Fintell with an 8-3 victory. Kovacic and Hunter will look to make it nine in a row when they face Meagan Schmulbach and Ashley Sammis of North Texas in flight "B" in the championship match.

In singles action, freshman Cigdem Duru and junior Tara Browning showed why they are the ones to beat in singles flight "A". Both Duru and Browning won their first two rounds in straight sets and will face each other in the finals.

Kovacic, Hunter, and freshman Janet Durham will also battle in the finals. Kovacic will face Karissa Walker of the Air Force Academy in flight "B", while Hunter faces Katherine Harris of North Texas in flight "C". In flight "D", Durham will compete against Miclynn Crail, also of the Air Force Academy.

Second round and final doubles matches will resume tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center. The final round of singles play will follow.
