Van der Drift Advances to Semis at Midland Invite

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's Samantha van der Drift advanced to the semifinals in the singles draw bracket of the women's tennis Midland Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.

The senior won her only singles match of the day by beating Nebraska's No. 1 player Madeline Giebert. Van der Drift takes on Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska in the semifinals tomorrow morning.

Sophomore Kelsy Garland was unable to advance as she lost in the quarterfinals to Texas A&M's Elze Potgieter who is the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

In doubles action van der Drift and Garland beat the team from Miami-Ohio in the quarterfinals but lost to Boise State's No 1. doubles team in the semifinals.

Freshman Stefanie Peana and Freshman Natalie Leitch lost to Baylor's No. 2 doubles team in a tiebreaker.

The final rounds of the tournament will start at 9 a.m. at the Midland Racquet Club.
